Tankless water heater installation and repair in NYC

Looking to upgrade your existing system? A tankless water heater gives continuous hot water and frees up space. We install, convert and repair tankless units in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan, and we tell you up front whether your gas line and venting are ready.

Why people upgrade to tankless

Hot water that does not run out

Water heats as it flows, so back-to-back showers do not drain a tank.

Space back

A wall-mounted unit frees the floor space a 50 or 75 gallon tank takes up, which matters in NYC basements and closets.

Lower standby loss

No tank of water kept hot around the clock.

Longer service life

With yearly descaling, tankless units typically outlast tank heaters.

What a tankless upgrade involves

Replacing a tank with a tankless heater is more than a swap. A gas tankless unit can use several times the gas of a tank heater at full output, so the gas line feeding it often has to be larger. It needs its own vent through an outside wall or approved chase, and condensing models need a drain.

We look at your gas supply, venting route and hot water demand before quoting, so there are no surprises halfway through the job.

If you need hot water back today, a same-day tank replacement is faster. You can always upgrade to tankless later.

What the installation needs

  • A gas line sized for the heater's full output, often larger than the old tank needed
  • A gas meter large enough, which may need utility coordination
  • Dedicated venting, often direct-vent PVC or stainless
  • A condensate drain on condensing models
  • An electrical outlet for controls
  • Isolation valves so the unit can be descaled
  • NYC Department of Buildings filing by a licensed master plumber

Tankless water heater repair

Error codes and lockouts

Ignition, flame, venting and overheat faults read and traced to the cause.

Water goes hot then cold

Scale, low flow, a clogged inlet filter or undersized gas supply.

Not enough hot water

Unit undersized for the household, or a gas supply that cannot feed full output.

Descaling and annual service

Flush the heat exchanger, clean filters, check combustion and venting.

Recent job

Bank of three Navien tankless water heaters

  • Three Navien condensing tankless units working together for high hot water demand
  • Each unit on its own PVC intake and exhaust venting through the ceiling
  • Recirculation piping so hot water reaches the fixtures fast
  • Gas line sized for all three units firing at once, with isolation valves
  • Condensate neutralizer cartridges on the drain lines, as condensing units require

Linking tankless units means hot water never runs out, even with many showers running at once. When demand is low, only one unit fires, which saves gas.

Tankless water heater questions

Can I replace my tank water heater with a tankless one?

Usually, yes. The main questions are gas supply and venting. A gas tankless heater burns much more gas at full output than a tank, so the gas line and sometimes the meter need upgrading, and it needs its own vent. We check both before quoting.

Is tankless better than a tank water heater?

Tankless gives continuous hot water, saves space and wastes less energy keeping water hot. It costs more to install and needs yearly descaling. For large households that run out of hot water, or tight spaces, it is often worth it. For a simple same-day replacement, a tank is faster and cheaper.

Do tankless water heaters need maintenance?

Yes. They should be descaled, usually once a year, because mineral build-up inside the heat exchanger cuts output and triggers error codes. We also clean the inlet filter and check venting and combustion.

Why does my tankless water heater go cold in the middle of a shower?

Common causes are scale build-up, a flow rate too low to keep the burner lit, a clogged inlet filter, a gas supply too small for the unit, or a venting or ignition fault shown as an error code.

Is a permit needed for a tankless water heater in NYC?

Yes. Gas water heater installation must be done by a licensed master plumber with the required Department of Buildings filing, and gas line changes are part of that work. We handle the paperwork.

Do you repair tankless water heaters?

Yes, including error codes, ignition and flame faults, scale problems, leaks and venting issues on major brands such as Navien, Rinnai, Noritz and Rheem.
